Left my Dad back home on his farm
I left my mom and my brothers
I miss my home, my Dad misses me
You see, I’m his only daughter
I work this mill from the morning to night
Dad was told they would teach me
But classes are long and my bones are tired
Teaching’s not going to reach me

I’d rather be back home on the farm
Instead of in this sweaty hell
I can’t begin to know what’s worse here
The truth or no one to tell

These wild shuttles fly by without stopping
Still I have to keep up
It’s hot and humid, yet the air’s still dusty
And rattles like stones in a cup
My friend Tara lost her right arm here
Mary don’t hear too well.
Me I keep quiet and just do my job
Who am I going to tell.

I’d rather be back home on the farm
Instead of in this sweaty hell
I can’t begin to know what’s worse here
The truth or no one to tell

We live over in the boarding house
The few hours a week we’re not here
Talk to each other about home and hearth
Maybe sneak a little beer.
I miss my dad back home on the farm
He misses me, his only daughter.
